Edsel is the son of Bonnie (Castleberry) Lilly and Thomas William Ebejer. His brother is musician Simon Dope, who originally was the keyboardist of Dope. Edsel’s parents divorced when he was five years old, and he and his brother grew up apart, with one sibling living with one parent at different times.

Edsel’s paternal grandmother was Dorothy Irene Smith (the daughter of Merlyn Lyle Smith and Flossie Ruth Kutzli). Merlyn was the son of Clement Earl Smith and Gladys Avora Kigar, and had English, and some Scots-Irish/Northern Irish and German, ancestry. Flossie was the daughter of Meno Kutzli, whose parents were Swiss-German, and of Ida M. Otto, whose father was German, and whose mother was born in Ohio, to French parents.
